St. Joseph Upper Primary School, in the village of Moonmury, Mattathur, Kodakkara, has been a cornerstone of quality education in this community since 1949. As a Government Aided institution under the Kerala State Education Department, we are committed to accessible, holistic education for every child.
The school offers Standards V to VII, following the Kerala State Syllabus in Malayalam medium, giving students a strong academic foundation during their formative years in a nurturing environment.

School History
Mattathur is a village area at the foot of the Kodasseri hills, about 6 km from Kodakara. In the nineteenth century this was a large forested region, and it was only towards the end of the World Wars that people began arriving here. During that period of food scarcity, the Travancore-Cochin Government introduced hill paddy cultivation, and as a result people from various communities began migrating to Mattathur. These communities also established their places of worship here, which is how the three-room St. John the Baptist Church came to be founded.
For the education of the people of that time, two Lower Primary schools were established in the early twentieth century — one at Avittathulli (Avittapilly) and another at Kodali. For the higher education of these children, the residents of the three-room church, under the leadership of the then Vicar, Fr. Jose Paranilath, established a Middle School in 1949. This is the first Middle School in Mattathur Panchayat. The school functions under the Irinjalakuda Diocese.
Initially the building had a tiled roof. The new school building seen today was constructed in 2009. Today, this school imparts the light of knowledge to 104 children across two divisions each in the UP classes. Rev. Fr. Thomas Velakkanadan is the current School Manager. The school, which has a staff of 10 members, is led by Headmistress Sr. Tomsy.
